The Ineffability of Blackness

“I only wish I had any colour to make them blacker,”* he says
to critics citing his sails for overblackness

sometimes there is something

that feels blacker than black

a further plummeting
greater mystery

sometimes the range feels further

than black to white

and we go quiet

without a referent

*William Turner’s response when criticized for the blackness of the the sails in “Peace—Burial at Sea”
